The FDA has announced temporary flexibility regarding the packaging and labelling of shell eggs sold to consumers in retail food establishments. This is so that during the pandemic companies can redirect production intended for restaurants and institutions to retailers.
In response to the surge in consumer demand, the FDA has announced that 30-egg flats normally sold to restaurants may now be sold without labels.
The retail food establishment must display certain information, including a Statement of identity and the name and place of business of the producer.
According to Nielsen data, egg sales in the US increased by 85.7% year-on-year in the week of 21 March, while in the previous four weeks sales grew by 29.2%.
