Organic wine sales set to surge by 2023
A study conducted by International Wine & Spirits Research (ISWR) has revealed strong global growth in organic wine consumption, in marked contrast to the wine industry’s overall downward trend.
According to estimates, by 2023 organic wine sales will reach 976 million bottles (34% up on the 729 million of 2018), equivalent to 3.5% of total consumption (compared to 1.5% in 2013).
The study also found that in 2018 the organic wine market in the world’s top five wine consuming countries (United States, France, Italy, Germany and China) reached a value of €3.3 billion.
Germany is currently the biggest consumer country (17.6% of the market), but is expected to be overtaken by France by 2023. The world’s biggest organic wine producing countries are currently Italy (708 million bottles in 2018), France (361 million bottles) and Spain (341 million bottles). These volumes are likewise expected to increase by 2023 to reach 924 million bottles in Italy (+30%), 613 million bottles in France (+70%) and 599 million bottles in Spain (+76%).
Italy is also the world’s largest exporter of organic wine.
