US e-commerce retailers hiring new employees
Thousands of new workers are being hired by major US online retailers as they look to take on new staff to cope with busy workloads.
Amazon is hiring about 100,000 people and raising wages for hourly workers doing home deliveries. CEO Jeff Bezos announced in a memo: “Much of the essential work we do cannot be done from home. We’ve implemented a series of preventative health measures for employees and contractors at our sites around the world – everything from cleaning to adjusting our practices to ensure the recommended social distancing guidelines.” Bezos said that Amazon is looking to hire bar and restaurant workers who are currently unemployed as a result of forced closures.
Instacart is likewise looking for extra staff. The US company, which provides online delivery services (it does your shopping at the nearest store and delivers it to your home within an hour), is recruiting 300,000 employees to cope with growth in demand in the US and Canada. The company has reorganised its business so as to streamline operations and reduce waiting times. “The last few weeks have been the busiest in Instacart’s history, and we’ve been proud to serve as an essential service for you and the millions of customers relying on you to deliver their groceries and household goods,” said CEO Apoorva Mehta.
