What it is. Poultry meat tray, secondary processing under Coop brand (4 ref.)

Materials. XPS tray with min. 30% post-consumer recycled material from mechanical recycling.

Product or target market. Poultry meat secondary processing (4 ref.); Italian market.

Technology. Contribution as a user to a supply chain dedicated to the recycling of PS, consistent with the principles of the circular economy, ensuring the demand for a second raw material and, consequently, stimulating the development of the recycling chain itself. In this path, which has seen the various actors of the supply chain engaged for almost 3 years, the role of Coop Italia has also been fundamental, as it has allowed the closure of the cycle of this new supply chain, thus giving evidence of the joint effort of the whole value chain. As a user of the XPS tray with min 30% post-consumer recycled material for food use, Coop has worked to obtain performance guarantees of shelf life and suitability for food contact, in order to allow its industrialization in branded products.

Sustainability. Considering the sales in 2021 of the 4 references of poultry meat second processing involved in the project, the amount of recycled PS used is around 30 tons; this quantity, which comes from the recovery of PS material from the disposal chain, is therefore deducted from the amount treated as undifferentiated waste.
