Hungary: retail sales up 50% in a week

According to a study published by market research firm Nielsen, Hungarian consumers made purchases worth a total of HUF 57 billion (about EUR 170 million) from supermarkets, hypermarkets and grocery stores between 9 and 14 March.

Due to the health emergency, consumption in stores increased by 50% compared to the same period the previous year.

According to measures introduced by the government, consumers can shop at different times depending on their age: from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon for the over-65s and in the afternoon for younger age groups.

Some chains such as Auchan and Tesco provide home delivery services and only accept bank transfers to minimise contact with couriers.
